We implemented a Crestron Home processor as the central hub, providing intuitive control over lighting, motorized shades, and audio in nearly every space. The system allows the client to program favorite scenes, such as “Day Spa,” “Entertain,” and “Relax,” which configure lighting and music across indoor and outdoor areas with a single touch.

To ensure seamless integration, we used panelized lighting, Cameo keypads, and touchscreens, carefully planning for locations and load requirements. Battery-powered shades were installed after construction was completed to accommodate late-stage requests without disrupting the build. Music was distributed throughout the property with multiple zones, creating an immersive experience in the pools, gym, sports court, and lounge areas.

As budget is always an issue in any job we work on, SMARTHOME has extensive experience in assessing any job and finding the most cost effective solution that will work best in each individual situation. After assessing the conference room at the Danbury Hilton, which had soffits, a drop ceiling and a small screen, we were able to suggest the following solution:

a motorized 100” wide screen which we retrofit in the existing structure of the room and completely re-tracts into the ceiling
a single tablet mounted on the wall is used to raise and lower the screen
a video scaler that makes it easy for each user to hook their computers, tablets or laptops into the system

This system not only allowed the hotel to be competitive in the market place and attract both new and current clients to use their hotel and conference services, it also makes it easier for the clients and the hotel staff.

We were able to build out this job around conferences and schedule the install during the work week as to not disturb the weekend guests. It only took a couple of days and we stayed within budget

The Assembly Room is a large room and can hold a few hundred people. Presentation data in the form of powerpoint or training videos need to be easily seen and heard throughout the space. We accomplished this from three fronts. First, at the main presentation space in the front of the room we installed a 156" screen that retracts into the ceiling when not being used. Such a large screen creates an image viewable with text large enough to easily read from almost anywhere in the room. An image this large needs a bright projector, we installed a Digital Projection M-Vision projector that was bright enough to light the 156" screen under full commercial lighting. Second, half way down the seating area on both sides of the room we installed HDTV wall plates and configured 60" flatscreen monitors on rolling stands. These screens can be rolled out, plugged in and now, the same image on the 156" movie screen is duplicated on the monitors for very large audiences. The viewers from the middle of the room to the back can see the presentation on these screens instead of trying to read what may be small text on the large screen in the front of the room. These TV's are portable, so they can be rolled away when there is a smaller group and rolled out when needed.

Lastly, speakers were installed throughout the room in the ceiling acting as sound reinforcement to keep the sound even throughout the space. Everyone in the room is able to hear the presenter in the front of the room, no need to shout, no confusion for the members on what is being conveyed.

In addition, computer wall plate connection points were installed in a number of various locations throughout the room so the presenter could be in the front, middle or back of the room. As presenters would bring their own laptops and that critcal requirement of 100% uptime needed to be met, we installed a Crestron system with a scaler built in. This assures that whatever screen resolution is coming from the presenter's laptop, our system will understand the signal and scale it to fit the movie screen and HD monitors exactly.

Control is from a 10 button keypad mounted in the podium that simplifies startup and shutdown of the system. Audio volume is also adjustable by the keypad via a rotary dial. This simple control assures that just about anyone can walk up and start the system. For advanced control, an ipad running a customized application gave much greater control of the system. This ipad was reserved for those trained on the system for fine tuning during presentations.

Smarthome supplied and installed a projector while the town supplied the on wall screen previously installed in the old firehouse. This is just one way cost savings were attained on this project. The on-wall touch screen allowed for easy set up for any trainer using the equipment. A series of prompts on screen will guide even a first time user to successfully operating the room. Through custom programming and input from those who use the room daily, the on screen prompts could be updated after install. Once users are familiar with the system and less instruction is needed, the startup prompts can be streamlined to get the system running quicker. When users are very comfortable with the system just a single press can get the system configured and up and running.

The room was equiped with both a VGA and an HDMI connection on the wall. These connections are for the presenter's laptop to display.

After assessing the space, the owner’s requirements and the room’s capabilities, SMARTHOME went to work. We installed 20 speakers throughout the space which allowed for the music to be heard evenly in the room without being loud. These speakers also amplify the audio of the wireless microphone system. We installed a new projector bright enough to be seen in complete daylight and a retractable screen to save space in the room. The AV system is now controlled by a single system with the wall mounted tablet.

Albe Furs - digital signage

Albe Furs has two retail locations in Connecticut. They were looking for digital signage to be installed in both locations so they could have messages targeted toward their shoppers.

The messages and advertisements displayed on the screens are easily accessed by marketing staff by uploading to 'the cloud'. This method allows for updates from almost anywhere. Content can be created and assembled by various members of the team and when finished, uploaded to the screens. This also allows for content to be uploaded to both retail locations to have a consistent marketing message, without leaving the office.

Tavern 1757 - Bar / Restaurant Audio & Video System

OUR SOLUTION:

We designed a security system that contains cameras at the back kitchen door to document deliveries; all patron areas to protect against claims including front and side doors, patio, restaurant, the stairwell and the event room. Cameras over registers, the bar and the back of the house help protect the owner as well as the staff from claims of misuse.

The owner was very entrepreneurial and forward thinking. He was always looking for ways to maximize his business and thought with the growth of the Food and Cooking Channels, he might want to produce a local cooking show at his restaurant. He asked us to wire the kitchen for professional video cameras in the event he moved forward with that project in the future.

Outside, we installed on the wall speakers for the patio dining area.

Upstairs, there was a very large event room which could be used as one large room or could be broken down into 3 smaller rooms. We wired the space for multiple projectors, retractable screens and on the wall controls giving this room the flexibility to run one event or up to three events at a time.

Since this was a large job, we were able to compartmentalize the components of the project to finish one area at a time. This not only helped the owner with his budget but helped us in coordinating time tables with the other construction workers on the job and to stay on time.

Funeral home - Outdoor Digital Signage

Colonial Toyota - Complete A/V system for New Dealership

Smarthome was called in during the construction phase working with many of the contractors to make this job happen within the timeline outlined.

One part of the renovation was to redesign the showroom and the service waiting areas to have a higher end look and feel. The usual drop ceiling tiles were replaced perforated aluminum tiles. The owner had a specific request that we didn’t put speaker holes in these ceiling panels for the audio system. The speakers had to be put behind the tiles, which presented another challenge. The sound would be dramatically distorted behind the tiles. Smarthome worked with the manufacturer and sent them a ceiling tile to be tested in their acoustic testing lab in California and create custom cross over circuits which were installed on the 29 pairs of speakers at the dealership. Those circuits compensated for the effect of the aluminum drop circuit tile.

Designated employees needed to be able to control the audio system from their computers. Smarthome installed so these employees could control the volume, stations, etc right from their desks.

Digital Signage Screens were installed throughout the service and showroom areas of the dealership. These screens would be used both for customer messages – specials, dealership and community events, etc. In addition, we also installed a flat panel screen in the service area facing the clients while they are completing their intake survey. Updates to all messages can be made by the in-house marketing department whether they are on-or off-site and whether the information is on a computer at the dealership or if its held in the cloud.

For their “younger customers”, the owner created two video game rooms - one in the service area and one in the sale area. Both were glassed in rooms, partitioned off so the noise will not bother other clients. Smarthome installed flat panel screens connected to a video game system; colonial Toyota provided NASCAR car bodies for the kids to sit in while they play games.

Smarthome’s installation took a couple of weeks ~ prep time to work with all the other contractors and the speaker manufacturer took a couple of months.

Connecticut Orthopaedic Specialists - Patient Education System

Connecticut Orthopedic Specialists is comprised of 9 locations across Connecticut. They wanted to upgrade their audio system so all locations would be consistent. Some locations had music, some didn’t some had large screen TV’s, some had older models that needed to be upgraded. They also wanted to have custom marketing messages played on the TV’s in the waiting room; 30 minutes of every hour. Messages would be updated on a monthly basis ~ and in some cases, the messages would be customized to a specific location.

Mid State Medical Center - Linac A/V system for patients receiving cancer treatment

Several different meetings with all stakeholders allowed us to design a couple different solutions answering different demands. Finally the client chose the solution that was most unique and the most difficult to install. The chosen solution is a three screen solution that allows the patient to enjoy the video entertainment regardless of which position the patient needs to lie in. Music speakers in the ceiling allow for great sound whether the patient chooses to watch a movie or listen to music.

The heart of the system is a Kaleidescape movie server. Kaleidescape archives movies from the DVD disc to a network hard drive array. No more tracking discs, losing discs, misplacing discs or asking the patients to peruse a shelf of movies. The movie system presents every movie stored in either an alphabetical list or images of the movie covers. Select a movie by any criteria - name, director, length of movie, rating, etc. All of this information is presented on all of the screens in the system. Choose a movie, hit play and the movie starts instantly. Other systems require a paper list to be printed out. this only allows for movies to be catagorized by one method and then the movie has to be found and loaded. The Kaleidescape system does all the movie management for you. One of the requirements outlined in the design stage is that the system be easy to use. The technicians are educated, trained professionals and they did not want to add 'movie usher' to their daily list of duties.

Music is also an option for the patients. They may not want to watch movie or TV series, they may request to listen to music to relax them. This is accomplished in one of two different ways. First, CDs can be archived by the Kaleidescape system just like movies. A selection of music was purchased and archived before the system was installed. Patients can select from among these provided music CD's or choose from option 2. The second option provided is an iPod dock. The patients can bring in their own iPod with their music already on it and plug right into the system. The patients can listen to their favorite music to get the most enjoyment from the system.

Control was a major consideration and a major requirement of the client that the system is be easy to use. For control a 4 inch color touchscreen along with a preview monitor is provided. Controlling the system is easy since all available options are presented on the touch screen. Select a movie or choose songs, preview the movie on the technician's preview monitor and then just press play. The movie starts immediately without playing all the movie trailers included on the disc. Simple, and the feedback from the technicians is that it is exactly what they asked for. It does not add any extra work for them because it is so easy to use.

The response from the patients and the administration of the hospital was even better than expected. The corporate interior design firm produced a video with actual patient and doctor testimonials. Danbury Childrens Hospital - Interactive Video Wall

The three images initially installed were: an aquarium where as you reached out to touch the screen the fish swam away; a pond covered in leaves, as you moved your hand over the image the leaves would blow away and a human form, where when you waved your hand over the image, it would turn to a skeleton.

Human body skeleton This was a case where an idea was presented, loved and accepted by all the stakeholders but the challenge came in when the interior designer needed to complete it. This was an extremely specific installation and an appropriate timeline for installation was not considered. The only company in the world who manufactured this product was in Israel which created another layer that increased the timeline.

Smarthome worked very closely with this company to figure out how to work within the confinements of the current construction time line; technical requirements of the system, the room requirements/construction and the ceiling height we had to mount the projector to and complete the installation in a short timeline right before the grand opening.
